Abstract
Abstract Data from the 1973 Minnesota atmospheric boundary layer experiment are used to investigate details of the turbulence kinetic energy budget in convective conditions. Surface layer results are presented in nondimensional form and compared with conclusions from earlier Kansas data. Above the surface layer the terms are nondimensionalized using mixed layer similarity length and velocity scales and compared with indications from other recent experiments.

Non‐precipitating cumulus convection and its parameterization
Abstract This paper discusses the thermodynamic transports of heat, liquid water and (briefly) water vapour by non‐precipitating cumulus convection. It is shown that because of ...
Quasi-Steady Analysis of a PBL Model with an Eddy-Diffusivity Profile and Nonlocal Fluxes
Analytic solutions to a planetary boundary layer (PBL) model with an eddy-diffusivity profile (i.e., a K profile) and nonlocal fluxes are presented for the quasi-steady regime.T...
A Comparison of Shear- and Buoyancy-Driven Planetary Boundary Layer Flows
Planetary boundary layer (PBL) flows are known to exhibit fundamental differences depending on the relative combination of wind shear and buoyancy forces. These differences are ...
Observational studies in the atmospheric boundary layer
Abstract Winds and temperatures in the boundary layer measured during two Australian expeditions are analysed according to the similarity scheme, with the use of four stability ...
Top-Down and Bottom-Up Diffusion of a Scalar in the Convective Boundary Layer
The vertical diffusion of a passive conservative scalar through the convective PBL is actually the superposition of what we call “top-down” and “bottom up” processes. These comp...
