Trehan, S. K. Abstract The stability of twisted magnetic fields confined to an infinitely long cylinder of incompressible inviscid fluid of infinite electrical conductivity is investigated when fluid motions of varying amounts are present along the lines of force. It is found that the system is stable only when the energy in the velocity field is at least equal to that in the magnetic field.
