Abstract
Abstract Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) can be defined as clonogenic cells, each of which has the properties of both self-renewal and differentiation to all known blood cell types (Till and McCulloch, 1963). The search for hematopoietic stem cells began with the observation, by Till and McCulloch, that clonal donor progenitors can give rise to splenic colonies that include differentiated cells of the myeloerythroid types (Till and McCulloch, 1961; Becker et al., 1963; Wu et al., 1968).
