Abstract

Abstract This chapter illustrates the various ways in which social integration hasbeen measured and provide guidelines for choosing an appropriate measure. It discusses the theoretical underpinnings of the social integration conceptand reviews the various measurement techniques that have been used, including an overview of both individual and community-level social integrationmeasures. It suggests that measurement techniques should be chosen in the contextof hypotheses about how the social environment might influence health andwith consideration of the characteristics of the population under study. It also presents an overview of formal social network theory.
