Abstract
Abstract The ability of dictary selenium dioxide, L‐cystine, ethoxyquin (1,2‐dihydro‐6‐ethoxy‐2,2,4‐trimethylquinoline) and dl‐α‐tocopheryl acetate to inhibit autoxidation in incubated tissue homogenates was studied using the thiobarbituric acid test. Ethoxyquin (0.1 %) was as effective a tissue antioxidant as was dl‐α‐tocopheryl acetate (0.01 %). SeO 2 (0.14, 0.46 and 1.4 ppm) significantly inhibited autoxidation in the liver, kidney and heart; the effect varied with different vitamin E‐free diets. L‐cystine (0.3 %) reduced autoxidation in muscle when fed in a casein‐gelatine diet.
