Abstract

584 Total energy expenditure (TEE) measured by doubly labeled water (DLW) was used to validate self-reported physical activity (PA) of 16 young women (23.9 ± 5.0 y); and to assess differences between lean, athletic (n = 8) and obese, sedentary (n = 8) women (15.7 ± 4.0 and 41.4 ± 3.1% body fat, respectively, by underwater weighing). Activity energy expenditure (AEE) was calculated from daily activity logs using Ainsworth's Compendium of Physical Activities. TEE measured by DLW was similar (p>0.05) for lean and obese women (11095 ± 2540 and 11963 ± 1205 kJ/d). AEE calculated from PA logs was 017% lower than DLW estimates for obese women (5145 ± 1102 vs. 3617 ± 525, p<0.05), but not different for lean women. Although obese young women appear to under-report TEE and lean young women do not, ceratin assumptions of the Compendium coding system may not be valid for use in calculating AEE for obese subjects. Specifically, obese subjects had measured RMR values 25% lower than the assumed 4.184 kJ/kg/h. Correction of AEE for this deviation in obese subjects revealed that they actually over-reported AEE (5145 ± 1102 vs. 7016 ± 767, p<0.05). We conclude that while the Compendium system provides a valid estimate of AEE in lean, athletic women, its use for this purpose is not valid in obese, sedentary women without measured RMR corrections.
