Abstract
Quantum dots are semiconductor structures with an interesting property: Although they consist of many atoms, they can behave just like a single atom. In their Perspective, Julien and Alexandrou discuss results presented in the same issue by Bonadeo et al. in which the quantum state of a quantum dot has been coherently controlled. In addition to applications in optoelectronics as low-threshold semiconductors, these dots might be useful as logic elements in a quantum computer.
