Abstract
Abstract Prior research successfully developed polymer optical fibers (POFs) for multimodal polarization-maintaining applications, but these exhibited significant mode coupling due to substantial scattering. Our study investigated the interfacial gel polymerization process using lateral bilayer samples and dynamic light scattering, definitively attributing this scattering to cladding layer leaching into the core. Leveraging this understanding, we engineered and fabricated a double-cladding POF incorporating a middle layer between the core and cladding. Interference microscopy confirmed a uniform core, demonstrating the middle layer’s efficacy in preventing cladding leaching. This work highlights that a strategically placed middle layer can effectively preserve core integrity, offering a crucial advancement for future multimodal polarization-maintaining optical fibers using zero-birefringence polymers and other copolymer-based POFs.
